Professor James Q. Wilson, in his introduction to Thomas Reppetto’s (1974) book Residential Crime writes that “there is slowly arising a ‘new criminology’ to supplant traditional criminology.”

This essay seeks to critically evaluate the functionalist perspective on crime and deviance with to its impact on criminology. Functionalists believe that a society is held together by its institutions working in harmony; social consensus, and through common and agreed upon values and beliefs, to produce stability and order.

Positivist movement was introduced in the late 19 th century implementing a scientific approach to the criminology. Positivism evolved from biological theories emphasizing the idea of the so-called “born criminal” to the theories referring crime to psychological and social factors as the major cause of criminal action.
